Repairing Appliance Electronics
Advanced electronics using touch controls and embedded microprocessors are common in most new appliances, and can present a challenge for less experienced appliance repair techs. Some of the more basic units still use control knobs, but most use a combination of knobs and touch controls with LED or LCD display panels. Some of the most advanced appliances are operated by touch controls only.
The hi-tech controls you see on many new appliances indicate significant electronic complexity below the surface. Nearly all contemporary appliances have dedicated electronic circuit boards, which allow much greater control flexibility than was ever available with older style equipment which used relatively simple electro-mechanical switching. Most major brands feature very robust electronics with good longevity. To protect against lightning strikes and other causes for high transient voltages, many of the better circuits include specialized components to provide on-board surge protection. The most commonly used surge protection device is the Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV), which quickly blocks high-voltage transients. These are capable of blocking extremely large transients with thousands of volts. However, all MOVs break down internally over time from the effects of these surges, and MOVs are typically rated for a limited number of high voltage events. Eventually, they will no longer be able to provide much protection. For this reason, and because a small percentage of boards will have some inherent weaknesses, many electronic circuits eventually fail.
Appliance Master is well equipped to repair all types of appliances, even those with very advanced electronics. A complete diagnostic workup is our first order of business when repairing any appliance. We require a flat fee for these diagnostics, but never a trip charge or mileage fee. After these diagnostics are performed, and before repairing your refrigerator, washer, dryer, or any other appliance, we will always provide a quote. In addition, all work we perform includes a warranty for parts and labor.
