Range & Oven Maintenance
Maintaining your gas or electric stovetop range and oven properly is important for many reasons. Safety of course, is of primary importance. Improperly maintained cooking appliances can represent dangerous fire hazards. So, everyone should understand what their range and oven need for safe and reliable use.
Below most electric or gas burners is a drip pan. However, certain electric infrared ranges provide exceptions to this rule. Drip pans catch food particles and spills, and they also help reflect heat directionally, promoting the efficient use of gas and electricity. Obviously, flammable materials like grease and oil can catch fire, which is why drip pans should receive a regular and thorough cleaning. However, a dirty drip pan will become a poor heat reflector, reducing the electrical or gas efficiency of your range. Therefore, regular drip pan cleanings will reduce energy consumption, which is a double win for all of us. Heat can carbonize the materials caught by drip pans, so it helps to soak them for a while before scrubbing them clean. A good oven cleaner can also help. To make this job easier, try to clean these pans after any major spill.
NOTE: Covering your drain pans in aluminum foil is a very dangerous practice. The aluminum can short out the element contacts on electric ranges, and intensify grease fires with gas ranges. Please don't do this, and if you already are, please remove this foil immediately, but first make sure your range is turned off completely.
Ovens need regular cleaning for the same reasons drip pans need this. Here again, a good oven cleaner can be helpful, but we recommend against using anything containing ammonia. Hint: The more often you clean your range and oven, the easier this task will be.
